The Bible and the modern world
Indians are generally unfamiliar with the Bible, its stories, and its moral precepts. This lack of education is problematic since the Bible is the most influential book in history and underpins many aspects of the modern world. It has shaped the ideas of nation, self-governance, liberty, and rule of law. It was the engine of Western Civilization, modern science, arts, and education. Moreover, its moral teachings significantly influence fields like literature and human psychology. It is not possible to understand the modern world without knowing the Judeo-Christian worldview.
I was unaware of any modern work that provided a concise, accessible introduction to the Biblical concept of God and the core teachings of Christianity. Then, 'The Jefferson Bible' came to mind. Created in 1820 by Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the U.S. and one of the most influential political figures in modern history, The Jefferson Bible is a condensed version of the New Testament. It focuses on Jesus' philosophies concerning life, morality, and personal conduct, while deliberately omitting accounts of supernatural events, miracles, and doctrinal interpretations.
A brief introduction
I have modernized the biblical language and added some introductory material on the key aspects of Judaism and Christianity to make it more understandable for the Indian reader. I have included a short biography of Thomas Jefferson and a preface explaining why The Jefferson Bible is relevant to Indians.
This is intended to serve as a brief introduction to the Bible for those who wish to understand the moral foundations of Christianity, separate from its religious mythology. It is particularly recommended for young adults, as it can enhance their knowledge, understanding, and wisdom in today's world.
